A Quick Task For Better Golf, Practice Drills & More

Happy Monday,
We hope you’ve had a great weekend of golf…

A Simple Task to Better Understand Your Performance
Many golfers are familiar with being able to hit great shots on the range, but struggling on the golf course.
So what changes?
Rather than relying on feel and guesswork here is a simple activity you can do by yourself, or with the help of your golf coach.
Pick a quiet time to play a few holes and take your phone and tripod (or a golfing buddy) to film what happens on the golf course.
You don’t have to film every shot, just 2-3 drives, a few iron shots, some short game shots and putts.
Extra tips
Focus on the areas of your game you most want to improve.
If you struggle with a consistent strike and contact then film mostly face on. If you struggle more with accuracy, hooks and slices, film more down the line.
Face on
Face on shows your ball position, weight transfer and the low point of your golf shots.
Down the line
Down the line shows your swing path, face angles and release. Down the line is also useful if you struggle with toe/heel strikes.
What to look for?
From my 19 years of coaching experience, golfers often make simple mistakes on the golf course – they aren’t aiming where they think they are, they don’t swing through into a full, balanced finish like they do in practice.
Watching short game shots and putts is really interesting too.
Reflecting on your videos
A small, but important point – don’t look at any of the footage until you finish. You’ll immediately try to change your next swing and we want an unspoilt collection of your typical golf game.
If you have a coach, share the videos with them. If you are self-coaching you can compare these to videos of you in practice.
Don’t be disheartened if it doesn’t look as ‘elegant’ as it feels. Remember, if your driver swing looked like Rory McIlroy, but you hit it 205 yards with a banana slice, we’d struggle to know how to make you better…
If you aren’t happy with your technique, view it as a giant opportunity to improve your performance.
Wrapping up
Be respectful, only do this if you have a quiet 9 holes and will not be holding golfers up (I filmed 8-10 shots over 9 holes late last night).
If you have a golfing buddy this is much easier, I have no friends…so I had to use a mini tripod like this one.
Enjoy, I hope you find this as useful as I do.

Break X Golf Skills Game
This week’s practice drill is one of my all-time favourites for developing your short game and putting skills. It’s so chunky I couldn’t fill all the instructions on one screen.
Head to your chipping/putting green. Set your timer to 50 mins and see how many of the 8 challenges below you can complete…
There are 3 levels of this challenge, this is level 2. The Break X Golf app automatically unlocks new skills games when you improve your practice performance and hit PBs.
Break X Golf is a sister project to Golf Insider and was co-founded by Will Shaw.
You can check it out here.
Most golfers don’t know this secret
There is a small error with our email software BeeHiiv. They are working on it, so if the video doesn’t appear below you can watch it on this link.
