💬 Speed, Control & Tour-Level Insights with Matt Fitzpatrick

Ever wondered how a U.S. Open Champion trains for speed without losing control? In this chat with Dr. Sasho MacKenzie, Matt Fitzpatrick breaks down exactly how he uses The Stack system — including in-season training, speed data, and feel.

🏌️‍♂️ Rapid-Fire Takeaways:

✅ 121.3 mph avg clubhead speed — Fitzpatrick’s fastest ever average, tracked at the Sony Open
✅ He trains with The Stack even during tournament weeks, often post-round
✅ Heavier weights and overload training make the driver feel “like a toothpick”
✅ Speed gains don’t happen overnight — his fastest swings came 6–8 months into training
✅ The Stack improves not just speed, but feel and control via better tension and range
✅ Fitz trains technical swing changes while speed training — more reps, no impact
✅ Cold weather, fatigue, and layers all affect swing speed — don’t panic on bad days
✅ Speed potential lets him swing easier on-course, improving accuracy under pressure
✅ No trade-off with wedges — Fitz just practices them separately for full control
✅ Consistency over intensity: “Little and often” beats all-in for 10 sessions

⛳️ A Challenge for Your Next Round:

🔹 Track Your Swing Speed Changes – If you’re training for speed, keep a log. If you have never tracked your club head speed, make it to a range with some tech and find out your numbers.
🔹  Know The Science – Every +1mph in club head speed = roughly 2.5 yards in driving distance. If you can increase your club head speed by 10mph, you have the potential to hit the golf ball 25 yards further!

📊 Bonus Insight: Why “Speed Potential” Matters

Even if you don’t swing full out on course, training higher speeds gives you a reserve. That means smoother swings with less effort — which = better control + more consistency.

🎁 Exclusive Stack System Discount

No, this isn’t a paid sponsorship and the Stack System is pricey (as you need a speed radar too), but I’ve personally used it and saw some significant improvements with our university players when I was Head of Golf at the University of Exeter.

Break X Golf – Weekly Skills Game

Most golfers have an average first-putt distance of ~15 feet, so it makes sense to practice within this range and get in the mindset of trying to hole these putts. ‘10-20 Feet Putting’ is one of my favourite ways to practice this aspect of my putting.

For personalised practice plans and over 140 skills games, check out Break X Golf.

Break X Golf is a sister project to Golf Insider and was co-founded by Will Shaw.
