Free Stroke Gained Calculator
Have you played a round this weekend and want to know what stopped you from shooting a lower score? Well now you can, this strokes-gained calculator analyses every area of your game.
This year I’ve talked a lot about the importance of keeping playing stats – according to our study it is the number one way to lower your scores if you can spare an extra 5 minutes a week.
However, playing stats apps often come with a monthly subscription and don’t always make it clear what to work on.
The calculator I’ve built can’t store your data, so it isn’t aimed to replace a paid option, but I wanted all golfers to have access to great data.
What will this calculator tell me?
As you enter a round the calculator will calculate your strokes gained data vs the PGA Tour and break this down so you can easily compare your driving, approach, short game & putting performance.
The biggest minus number is generally the area you should focus on in practice. In the above example you can see that approach (-1.6) is my weakest area, followed by driving (-0.41), then putting (+0.01) and short game (+0.35) was my biggest strength for this round.
The value of strokes gained is that it allows you to compare each area of your game equally to learn how many shots you are losing.
Digging deeper
Along the top, you have tabs that allow you to dig deeper. In this example, my approach is the area costing me the most shots. When I hit the ‘Approach’ tab I can see a breakdown of my strokes gained by distance.
Here, the same logic applies, just look for the biggest minus. You can see that I’m above tour average for 50-100 yards and I’m not too bad outside of 200 yards, but I am losing a lot of strokes from 100-150 and 150-200.
This is what I need to work on.
If you follow this process you can start to target your weaknesses and get better at a far quicker rate.
Practice skills games targeting this area, get some coaching and think about strategy and how you hit these shots on the golf course.
This scoring > stats > practice approach is one of the biggest differences between golfers who practice and improve and those who practice but stay the same or get worse…
Traditional stats
The calculator also gives you traditional stats like fairways and greens in regulation, birdies, bogeys, DB+ and scoring averages for par 3s, 4s, and 5s. These data are also useful for understanding how you play golf so don’t feel you should only focus on strokes gained data.
